For more than 23 Years the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) has been terrorizing the Acholi people of Northern Uganda.
A Northern Ugandan Displacement Camp & Acholi Children in Camps - Photo's thanks to: invisible Children
In Uganda the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) has been fighting for over 23 years. Abducting Children and forcing them fight amongst their rebel ranks. These children are forced to commit horrible acts against their own communities and forced to take more children to fight amongst them. The children that do not fight or try to escape are brutally murdered in front of the other children, a highly effective way of training and desensitizing the remaining children. Approx numbers currently in the LRA is around 3,000.
Over 2 Million Northern Ugandan's (acholi) were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in government made Displacement Camps. The camps were built to shelter the civilians from the rebels, but instead, the rebels pilliaged the villages and stole the children, murdering and raping on their way. Having left millions displaced, thousands dead and kidnapped the LRA have moved into the Democratic Repbulic of Congo (DRC) and also into Southern Sudan. In January of 2009 government forces from Uganda, Sudan and the Congo launched an offensive to bring Joseph Kony to justice, this offensive failed and in retaliation to the military attacks the LRA in turned attacked the innocent civilians in the neighboring villages, causing more fear, death and displacement. One man, One Mad Man has terrorized these countries for 2 decades, it is time we as a society say "enough is enough" and bring forward government policies to help end the Longest Running War in Africa.
Christmas Day 2008. Over 600 innocent civilians killed and approx 100-200 children kidnapped by the LRA rebels. What were you doing on Christmas Day 2008?
Over the last few years the LRA has disbanded and moved into the DR Congo, Southern Sudan and Central African Republic. In DR Congo alone around 260,000 people were displaced by attacks and fear of the LRA. Over the last few months with a current military operation going, the LRA numbers have been dwindling, however Kony is still at large and until he is caught, we cannot say that the war is over....while he continues to be free, he will continue to fight.
